William Burr was born in October 1806 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A; Date Oct 1806 per CemSearch - age 70y 5m at death Mar 19 1877. Date Oct 1806 & location Waterown, NY per FindaGrave. Date 1808 & location Ont. per 1871 Census. Date 1807 & location USA per 1861 Census. Date 1811 & location USA per 1851 Census. per marriage reg'n. of Sophia (Redner) Burr and William Fraleigh. Date 1817 & location Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY per family tree of Olive Thompson on ancestry.ca, March 20 2019.1,4,5,6,3,7,8 He William Burr's father, Noahdiah Burr, died in 1814 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., NY. in 1814 at Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A..7 He Soon after William's father died in 1814, his mother married widower Philip Ainsworth who moved the family to Sophiasburgh Twp., where he engaged in business and was also a preacher. One would think that Sophia and the esisting children came to Canada with Philip, although two of three of the chidren of Philip and Sophia are shown in records to have been born at Watertown, NY. Might Sophia have been back and forth for child birth? Info in Canada says William Burr came here in 1820 at age 14. (Dan Buchana, May 9 2024) in 1815 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A.. He lived circa 1820 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "William Burr the pioneer came to Canada in 1820 as a boy of 14. He worked in Sophiasburgh Twp. for 10 years, then bought 100 acres in Hillier Township in what is now called the Burr neighbourhood. It was dense forest at that time and he lived in a small log cabin. He married Sophia Redner in 1834 and to them were born six children." from 7th Town Ameliasburgh, pg. 651.
Note: Land Registry Records show that William Burr obtained Patents from the Crown for land in both Ameliasburgh and Hillier Twp., along the border, including parts of lots 75 and 76. He also purchased some land in this same aera, in both Ameliasburgh and Hillier Twp., in the 1850s. The quality of print is very poor in the land records, so the years are best guess, but it is not unreasonable to suggest that these land grants were after he married Sophia Redner in 1834. One could see him getting patents due to his marriage to a binafide loyalist, while he had nothing from his own family that would make that happen. (Dan Buchanan, May 7 2024.)9 He lived in 1830 at Hillier Twp., Burr Neighbourhood, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "... He worked in Sophiasburgh Twp. for 10 years, then bought 100 acres in Hillier Township in what is now called the Burr neighbourhood. " per Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, pg. 651.9 He married Sophia Redner, daughter of Peter Henry Redner and Catherine Brickman, in 1834 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Carrying Place, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "Marriage solemnized at the Carrying Place by Rev. John Grier of the Anglican Church." per family tree of Douglas George Smith on ancestry.ca, May 7 2024.
per GEDCOM of Sherry Koshney Downard, Feb 9, 2003. Date 1834 & location Carrying Place per family tree of Olive Thompson on ancestry.ca, March 20 2019.1,2,3 William Burr lived on 20 April 1835 at Conc 5 Lot 76, Hillier Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that William Burr obtained the Patent from the Crown for 100 acres in the north half of lot 76, concession 5, Hillier Twp., Prince Edward Co. ITS Date: Apr 20 1835. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Prince Edward Co., Hillier Twp., Book 066, pg. 093 of 198, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, May 7 2024.)
Note: As with many of these early records, the year is a black smudge, so 1835 is an educated guess, considering it would most likely be after his marriage in 1834. It fits with the same kind of transaction for Ameliasburgh Twp.
Note: The land grant that William Burr obtained in both Ameliasburgh and Hillier Townships are just across the border. The Burr Neighbourhood is considered to be in Hillier Twp., south of the border, along the road to the east.10 He lived on 16 July 1835 at Conc 4 Lot 75, Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that William Burr obtained the Patent from the Crown for 100 acres of the east half of lot 75, concession 4, Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co. ITS Date: Jul 16 1835. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Prince Edward Co., Book 010, pg. 128 of 170, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, May 6 2024.)10 He lived on 4 August 1835 at Conc 4 Lot 75, Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that William Burr obtained the Patent from the Crown for 100 acres of the west half of lot 75, concession 4, Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co. ITS Date: Aug 4 1835?. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Prince Edward Co., Book 010, pg. 128 of 170, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, May 6 2024.)
Note 1: Reproduction of the earlier pages of this section of the land records is very poor. Names and dates are squiggles and smudges that must be viewed closely and very often an educated guess made as to specifics. I am going to leave it at 1835 as the likely year for this first Patent to William Burr.
Note 2: How was William Burr eligible for land grants? Probably through his wife, Sophia Redner, whose family were loyalists.10 He lived on 22 February 1843 at Conc 5 Lot 73, Hillier Twp., Prince Edward Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (B&S ?571?) show that Cornelius Ainsworth & wife sold 100 acres in the east half of lot 73, conc 5, Hillier Twp., Prince Edward Co. to William Burr. ITS Date: Feb 22 1843. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Prince Edward Co., Hillier Twp., Book 066, pg. 060 of 198, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, May 7 2024.)
Note: Year is a guess, based on lines above and below.10 He appeared on the census of 1851 at Hillier Twp., Prince Edward Co., Canada West; Age 45 at 1851 Census: Burr, William, 45, b. USA, Disciples, farmer, married; Sophia, 36, b. Cda., Disciples, married; Charity, 17; Peter, 16; Naomi, 14; Marshall, 12; Wesley, 9; Ainsworth, Jane, 65, b.
