Elisha Ames

M, #26272, b. circa 1780, d. circa 1820
  • Birth*: circa 1780; New York, U.S.A.; Location is a guess. Family history has this Ames group descending from the early settlers in Massachusetts and there are suggestions some of them lived in New York State before coming to Upper Canada. This would fit with the father of this Elisha Ames being a United Empire Loyalist. This is speculation, however, because there are few Ames' listed as receiving Crown Grants - and no Elisha.
  • Marriage*: 19 January 1804; Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; "Elisha Ames and Mary Ockerman, both of Fredericksburgh, Jan 19 1804." from Rev. McDowell's Marriage Register, Ontario Historical Society Papers & Records, Vol. 1, 1899, pg. 73, Ontario Archives, March 23, 2000; Principal=Mary Ockerman1
  • Death*: circa 1820; Ontario; IGI Record shows "Death: Before 04 Mar 1825, Ontario". This may refer to the date of his wife's second marriage to John Simons?? It is the only reference I have seen regarding Elisha Ames's death.
Note: The early death of Elisha Ames would fit well with the early life of James Ames, if they are father and son. There is absolutely no reference in any later records of the parents of James Ames, other than the fact, in census records, that he was born in Ontario around 1807.
  • Residence*: 19 January 1804; Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; Residence per marriage register - " ... both of Fredericksburgh ... "1
  • Census*: 12 March 1804; Adolphustown Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; "Elisha Ames, 2 men, 1 woman, 3 total" from Inhabitants of Adolpustown, March 12, 1804, seen on Lennox & Addington web site
  • Occupation*: 1809; Thurlow Twp., Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; Cooper: per reference in History and Settlement of Upper Canada.
  • Residence: 1809; Thurlow Twp., Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "Much of what is known about early life in Belleville comes from his wife's recollections, which are among the Canniff papers in the Ontario Archives. Martha once named the people living in houses within the original town limits in 1809 as "McIntosh, Johnson, Dr. Spareham, Major Thompson, P. Holmes, Mrs. Simpson (who owned the tavern), R. leavens, Simmons (a cooper), S. McNabb, Ames, Ackeman, Stewart and Maybee." She recalled seeing, as a girl of five, the construction scaffolding still standing at the Meyers house in the outskirts of the town." from "Homesteads: Early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto" by Margaret McBurney and Mary Byers, 1979, pg. 1062
  • Residence: 1809; Thurlow Twp., Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "In the year 1809, Alexander Oliphant Petrie came to live at Myers Creek. He found the following persons living in Belleville at the time. Commencing at the lowest part ….. John Simons; one Ames, a cooper; … …. Ockerman, a cooper; … " from pg. 498 of History and Settlement of Upper Canada, by Dr. Canniff
Note: Belleville was called Meyer's Creek until it became Belleville at some point.
Note: This passage is especially interesting because it names three potentially related persons. The Ames could have been Elisha Ames. The Ockerman could have been part of his wife, Mary Ockerman's family. John Simons could be the one Mary married after Elisha Ames died.??????
  • Census: 1810; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; 1810 Census: Elisha Ames, 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 1 female over 16, 2 females under 16
  • Census: 1811; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; 1811 Census: Elisha Ames, 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 1 female over 16
Note: The abcense of reference to the two females under 16 is quite clear; there are no confusing marks on the document. It would appear that the two girls have died.
Note: Elisha Ames is shown with no land but with 3 horses and one cow. His name is very near Francis Palmateer and Jacob and John Dingman which puts him at the current village of Norham.
  • Census: 1811; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; 1811 Assessment: Elisha Ames; - ; - ; - ; 3; - ; 1 ; - ; - ; 27; - ; - ; - ; 2; 3; - ; - ; 4; ...

  • Marriage*: 25 November 1850; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Elisha Ames to Lovina Vanwicklin, both of Cramahe, Nov 25 1850, by Rev. Lacey of Haldimand. Witnesses: Samuel and Emaline Farington" from District of Newcastle Marriage Registers, Ontario Archives
Note: This marriage register is clear in and of itself but it is speculation to say this Elisha Ames is the son of the earlier Elisha Ames, who may also be the father of our James Ames. Things fit rather well constructed this way, however. This connection assumes that Elisha, James' brother, lived with him on Waupoos Island and came up to Cramahe/Murray with them in 1850. This Elisha and his wife do not appear in any subsequent census records in this area.
Note: Earlier in our research we thought this Elisha Ames may be the son of James. However, this would make him about 14 years of age at the time of this marriage - not likley.; Principal=Lovina Van Wicklin1
