"Codrington - Many years have passed since Mount Olivet and the surrounding neighbourhood felt the keenness of death such as happened on Wednesday afternoon when the little house owned by Charles Goodfellow and occupied by Charles Kirk was completely enveloped in fire. Mr. Kirk had apparently tried to put the fire out and finding it impossible he then, it is believed, tried to secure some valuable papers, but lost his way. When the neighbours got there to help he was able to answer when they called but the flames drove them back from the windows and door and he was burned to death in the fire." from The Brighton Ensign, Friday, January 9, 1914, seen in microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Dec 5, 2001
Note: This article in the Ensign of Jan 9 1914 suggests the date of death was " .. on Wednesday afternoon ... " which would mean the Wednesday before or Jan 7 1914. The Death Registration, on the other hand, shows the date at December 31, 1913 - the Wednesday before.8,9
