  • Immigration*: 1870; Coe Hill, Ontario; Russell Jaques told me on October 10, 2000, at Campbellford, that his grandfather, Edward Blake Jacques (1861-1950) came from a large, poor family in Peckham Rye, a district of London, England. At the age of only 9 he ran away from home by himself and stowed away on a cattle ship bound for Canada. He ended up at Coe Hill where he spent his teens.

  • Note: circa 1905; Northumberland Co., Ontario; Emma (Hilton) Jacques did not like the C in the name because it appeared too "French", therefore she had it legally changed to Jaques. This is why the children of Edward and Emma are officially Jacques at their births but most subsequent references are Jaques. (per Anita Jaques, widow of Glenn Jaques, at a meeting in her home in Belleville, Oct 1, 2000)
Note: Actually, Glenn had told Anita that the name used to be Jakes. Documents do not support this.
Note: Official documents re this name change may be available - will try to find out how to get them.
