  • Note*: 1844; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; "Papers and magazines were brought in by stage. The earliest magazine recorded is the MOTHER'S MAGAZINE published in 1844 and was read by Hiram Buckley and family. Mrs. Duncan, born in 1844, who lived with her grandmother, Mrs. John Singleton, said: "a paper, the Montreal Witness, came once a week to Brighton, just two men being subscribers - A.C. Singleton and Alex. Martin - and when the paper arrived by the Stage, you can hardly imagine how everybody was anxious to know of what was going on in the world. In the evening after the paper arrived, the men assembled in A.C. Singleton's store, where the counter served as a platform. Mr. Alex. Martin perched upon the counter with a man on either side of him holding a candle that he might see to read. The war was talked over and there were great discussions before they parted for the night." page 154 & 155 of The Tobey Book.

  • Residence: 1805; 317 Dundas St., Belleville, Hastings Co., Upper Canada; "John Chisholm's cousin Alexander lived a short distance to the west. The house he built, so like those in his native Scotland, still stands at 317 Dundas Street West. It is one of the oldest houses in this part of Ontario and, although it has been altered during the years, it is still in remarkably good condition. It is difficult to date exactly. Chisholm's name does not appear on the title until 1809 but he likely built the house before then. The year 1805 appears above the bake oven. Possibly the house was built even earlier, for Chisholm was middle-aged man at the turn of the century and he and his wife had ten children, making a substantial house such as this almost a necessity." from "Homesteads: Early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto", by Margaret McBurney and Mary Byers, 1979, pg. 117
IMPOTANT NOTE: "This is seriously wrong. John Chisholm of Lot 1 Con 1 Thurlow was the father of Lt. Col. Alexander Chisholm." per email from Andrew Way, Jan 8, 2006.
And the next paragraph reads as follows: "Chisholm had emigrated to North America in 1775, stayed for a few months near Albany, New York, but left there in September of that year "finding it inconvenient to live in the Country" - due, no doubt, to the unsettling political situation. He spent the following winter in Quebec, serving with the British Militia. After the war he eventually settled on the north shore of the Bay of Quinte, near his brother Archibald and his cousin John."
