  • Residence*: circa 1910; Hwy 30 West Side North of Co. Rd. 26, Spring Valley, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Going north from Brighton to Campbellford, travellers followed a "given" road that curved around the hills of the beautiful rolling countryside. In the early 1900s the first building on this road as the Davidson grist and sawmill, opposite the grist mill on the upper level Mount Hope Cemetery. The water, which powered the mill, flowed through a large pipe from a pond just north of Spring Valley Park on both side of County Road 26. A watering trough provided drink for both a man and his horse. Another landmark was the imposing while clapboard Davidson house just past the county road on the right, occupied in 1880 by Mrs. Borland and her children. Later was owned by Ed Nelson and then Peter Kilbank. It was later occupied by Mrs. and Mrs. Chatteson and their children, Myrtle (Mrs. M. Cheer) Roscoe and Flossie (Mrs. Harold Coulter). Roscoe and his wife, Maude Chatten, also lived there. Mrs. McCready, a dear old Irish lady, lived across the road. Her daughters were Mrs. Amos Rowley, Mrs. Roblin, Mrs. Buchanan and Mrs. Hetage. On the hill lived Mrs. Alex Davidson, whose son Sandy served as the mail driver for RR 4 for many years. His route went west from Brighton, circled to the concession road, Little Lake Road, and came out at Spring Valley. Next came the brick house built by William Flindall in 1880. His new neighbours were extremely annoyed to find that the vacant land they had been using as a "common" was now a working farm. Across the road lived Jim and Mattie Buchanan, son Bob and daughter Lulu. Both went to western Canada." from "A Trip With Kate", Chapter 6, pg. 40 of "Brighton Township", by Florence Chatten, 2009. "Kate" was Kate (Flindal) Gibson.7
